Mobile and Big Data – My Guess is Better Than Yours!

How is the enterprise of the future going to succeed? Businesses that take their queue from the creative use of mobile and Big Data demonstrated by retail organizations will not only crush their competition, but leave them wondering what magic is behind their success. Check out this week’s Mobile-Only post, Mobile and Big Data – The Enterprise Crystal Ball to learn why enterprises that adapt to deliver predictive results to employees via their mobile devices have a bright future ahead of them.

Working an Entire Year Using Only a Smartphone – Mobile-Only Video Shorts

Working an Entire Year Using Only a Smartphone – Mobile-Only Video Shorts
SAP, Samsung Mobile, Palador and The Guardian team up to launch mobile-only content series

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM October 23 2012

Palador, in collaboration with SAP, Samsung Mobile and the Guardian Media Network have released the first in a 12-month series of video shorts that will follow the experiences of one leading mobile executive, Benjamin Robbins, as he attempts to work for an entire year using only his smartphone and a range of native and web-based applications.

The video shorts – which will see Mr. Robbins undertake a range of tasks in a mobile-only fashion, from the mundane and everyday to the exotic and bizarre – are written, filmed, edited, and published exclusively using a smartphone device. The first short, entitled Mobile Only – Lost and Found, chronicles the adventures of an executive who’s lost his pink rhinestone phone in a Chicago cab and needs to get it back, quick.

In future shorts Mr. Robbins will jet all over the world to film the vignettes on location, and will include him running for 8 hours without stopping on a treadmill whilst conducting a “normal working day” at a business conference. The series will also see Mr. Robbins creating a presentation while underwater, running a marathon while communicating with the office, and spending a day and night working remotely from the wilderness – always using only his smartphone.

Mr. Robbins is one of the top 50 Twitter Mobile Influencers, and writes one of BizTech’s Top 50 Must Read IT Blogs. He speaks regularly on the subject of Enterprise Mobility and blogs weekly on remotelyMOBILE, the Enterprise Mobility Forum, and The Guardian Media Network.

The shorts will be distributed via the Guardian Media Network, an online community for media, tech and mobile professionals, and will feature a range of SAP mobile applications used on Samsung Mobile devices. The series is scheduled to run one short a month for the next year. These shorts will be supplemental to the already popular Mobile Only blog series which will be syndicated on the Guardian Media Network.

Commenting on the project, the Guardian Media Network’s editor Robin Hough said: “We’re delighted to be working with Palador, SAP and Samsung Mobile to promote growth and uptake in mobile-only working. Working via mobile devices is one of the fastest moving areas in digital right now and it’s only fitting that we should be creating an innovative content-led project to reflect this exciting new frontier.”

Mr. Robbins, a principal at Palador, the mobile consultancy added: “Why wouldn’t you want to work mobile-only? The immediate challenges of working solely from a mobile device are dwarfed by the possibilities that mobility provides for business benefit. This video series is meant to not only entertain but also show just how far the reach of the enterprise can be extended by mobility.”

I’m Not a Mobile Freak After All

Last week I lamented in the The Myth of the Mobile Worker that working mobile-0nly at a mobile conference was akin to being in the freak show at the circus. However, as luck would have it, I got a chance to speak with not one, but two individuals who work almost exclusively mobile this past week. From these conversations I was able to glean some great insight and commonalities between our approaches to working mobile-only. Check out Collective Wisdom - Mobile-Only Strategies  on The Enterprise Mobility Forum to see what I learned. Post a comment and let me know how you approach working on your mobile device.

Mobile Man/Woman, Show Thyself!

Imagine a mobile conference that was dominated by people working on PCs? What does that say about mobility? About us? This week’s mobile-only post takes a hard look at how we say one thing but do another when it comes to mobility. Check out The Myth of the Mobile Worker on The Enterprise Mobility Forum and let me know if you agree.

Symantec – Delivering the ‘Easy Button’ of Mobile App Management

As organizations mature in the mobile space and realize that they need more than the bludgeon of device management, they begin to look at more refined solutions of app and information management. A distant cousin to device management, but functionally more refined, app management allows organizations to control the portals to corporate information; mobile apps. Today at MobileCON 2012 , Symantec is making announcements that further remove barriers for enterprises and mobile app developers to develop, deploy, and support mobile app management. These announcements will continue to enhance Symantec’s position as a mobile app management leader.

The first announcement is Symantec is rebranding Nukona App Center to Symantec App Center Ready. (If you are unfamiliar with the Nukona solution, check out the three part interview I conducted pre-acquisition with then CEO, Chris Perret of Nukona; Part I , Part II ,and Part III.) Symantec App Center Ready allows app developers the ability to add enterprise security without any source code changes. This is a massive advantage in enabling a hassle –free security solution. Symantec App Center Ready provides app developers global visibility of their efforts, while at the same time assuring enterprises a secure context. This rebranding will take effect immediately.

Second, Symantec is creating a way for partners in their ecosystem to gain recognition as a mobile solutions provider. Symantec announced the Mobility Solution Specialization for partners. This will provide partners with training, marketing, and funds to deliver trusted mobile solutions. This partner specialization will be multi-tier (gold, silver, bronze) giving partners a way to distinguish themselves in the marketplace. The Mobility Solution Specialization will be available for partners in Q4 of this year.

Lastly, Symantec is helping enterprises remove the confusion of purchasing decisions around enterprise mobility management. Instead of organizations needing to choose between device or app management, enterprises will now be able to have a single, comprehensive security solution for the device, app, and data layers. Called the Mobile Management Suite, Symantec will offer a single package that will deliver all those mobile management pieces under a single license. The Mobile Management Suite license will be on a per user basis rather than per device. This will mean huge savings as mobile devices per user, such as a tablet and smartphone, grows. Symantec will offer the Mobile Management Suite starting now for $122 MSRP per user per year.

Enterprise mobile initiatives, such as BYOD, are quickly driving organization to identify and implement refined approaches to mobility management. End users are no longer content with the draconian and heavy-handed device management approach to security. In this more civilized age, organizations that can find an easy and adaptable path to a secure environment will flourish. Symantec is providing the means for developers and IT to quickly and easily deliver that refined experience to the enterprise for the secure environment of the future.

What do Dr. Seuss and Enterprise Mobility Have in Common?

Dr. Seuss imagined some fun and zany worlds that kids for generations have enjoyed. This fun filled world provides the backdrop for this weeks mobile-only post. Check out how our real world approach to mobility often mirrors that imagined world of Dr. Seuss in There’s a Data Socket in Your Pocket on the Enterprise Mobility Forum.
